About the Program

The Thomas J. Edwards Learning Center offers students an opportunity to develop their learning skills through credit-bearing courses in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Instructors trained in their particular areas present courses in a personalized atmosphere enhanced by tutorial assistance.
Learning Center courses are open to any undergraduate student enrolled in the university. While the center is not a degree-awarding program, it does offer courses that carry regular academic credit.
Practical Experience and Special Opportunities
Fundamental to the center is its free tutoring program, available on a walk-in basis, to any undergraduate student enrolled in the university. Tutoring services are offered in mathematics and writing. The Writing Place and the Math Place offer students a comfortable and encouraging environment to receive assistance with their learning.

Explores operations on the real numbers, problem solving, operations on polynomial and rational expressions, equations with rational exponents, solving systems of linear equations and inequalities in one or two variables, and factoring. Introduces quadratic equations.

Reviews precalculus algebra and trigonometry, emphasizing functions (transformations, cobinations, and composite functions). Topics include graphing and applications of linear, inverse, quadratic, polynomial and rational functions; limits and the derivatives; exponential and logarithmic functions and applications; and trigonometric functions emphasizing sine and cosine.

ULC 211 is not open to students who have already taken ENG 101 or ENG 201.
Helps writers grasp the fundamentals of standard written English. Concentrates on expository essay writing for diverse audiences. Instruction initially emphasizes focus development, content generation, and organization. Sentence structure and grammar are also a focus. Expects students to revise their work extensively. One-on-one conferences and small-group feedback sessions are a regular part of the classroom setting.

Writing research and term papers is a primary activity during a student’s four years of college. Introduces students to proper research skills and procedures for collecting and reorganizing information into a well-written report. Teaches students a basic method of writing a research paper.

Provides students the necessary skills for life-long learning. Focuses on selecting research topics, locating appropriate materials, analyzing information sources and synthesizing information. Also addressed are the issues of intellectual freedom, plagiarism and copyright. Successful completion of the course fulfills the Library Skills Workbook requirement.
