Academic Advising
Academic advisors are a valuable resource for assisting students in the attainment of their educational goals and adjustment to the academic rigors of university life. Professional advisors offer a broad spectrum of information and services to all undergraduate students. A major aspect of the advisement process is to assist students in becoming independent, self-confident decision makers who are able to solve problems that arise in the process of pursuing their education. Advisors must be certain that all students, especially at-risk students, are kept abreast of the opportunities for academic assistance and support offered to enhance academic success. Students meet with advisors as often as they choose to explore educational opportunities available within the university and plan a course of study that is consistent with their abilities, achievements, interests, and expectations. Advisors also help students build individual strategies for academic success by assisting them in determining an appropriate course load; interpreting academic requirements, university procedures, and regulations; and consulting with students who are considering a particular major as a field of study. When appropriate, advisors will refer students to other university offices that provide student services, such as Counseling Services, Health Services, Wellness Education Services, Career Services, Financial Aid, the Student Response Center, and the Learning Center. The ultimate goal of academic advising is to empower students to use the tools and resources available to become active and responsible learners.
