The Department of Music offers performers, scholars and composers a stimulating and exciting environment in which to develop their talents. The faculty is comprised of internationally known soloists, ensemble musicians, orchestral players, composers, music theorists and historical musicologists committed to preparing students for careers in music. Our goal is to provide a diverse array of courses for music majors, minors, and non-majors which will help them to build a strong foundation in many areas of music.

In addition to offering weekly studio lessons, faculty direct performance initiatives at the university and throughout the local community, providing students with unique performance opportunities in Buffalo and around western New York. The department hosts world-renowned visiting artists and ensembles throughout the year, offering students free admission to a full season of concerts and the opportunity to participate in guest master classes.

The Department of Music hosts over 150 events annually, showcasing internationally recognized visiting artists and lecturers. The Music Library houses one of the largest collections in the eastern United States with fully catalogued holdings of 224,000 items including scores, volumes, periodicals, sound recordings, videos, slides and photographs. Students have a dazzling variety of performance opportunities including:
  • the UB Symphony Orchestra
  • Opera Studio
  • University Chorus
  • University Choir
  • UB Concert Band
  • Percussion Ensemble
  • UB Jazz Ensemble
  • Student Recitals
  • Contemporary Ensemble
  • and numerous other small ensembles.
In addition to music theory and music history courses for majors, numerous other classroom opportunities exist including offerings such as Music in the Movies, Music and Society, Rock Music and Electronic/Computer Music, open to both majors and non-majors.
